How to Play the Typing Speed Test

This free WPM test measures your typing speed over 30 seconds. It's a quick and accurate way to check your words per minute and track improvement over time.

  1. Click or tap to focus the input field
  2. Type the displayed text as accurately as possible
  3. The timer starts when you begin typing
  4. After 30 seconds, see your WPM score

Improving Your WPM

Most people type between 30-50 WPM. Touch typists average 50-80 WPM, while professionals often exceed 100 WPM. The key to improvement is consistent practice with proper finger positioning. Don't look at the keyboard - let muscle memory guide you. Accuracy matters more than speed initially; errors slow you down more than careful typing!

Did You Know? The world record for typing speed is over 200 WPM! The average person can significantly improve their speed with just 15 minutes of daily practice.

How to play

Type the words on screen as fast and as accurately as you can for 30 seconds. Correct letters turn green, mistakes turn red, and finishing a block loads a fresh one instantly. Your score is words per minute, counted from correct characters only, so sloppy speed does not pay.

Tips

How words per minute is calculated

This test counts only the characters you got right. A standard word is treated as five characters including the space, so your WPM is correct characters divided by five, scaled to a full minute. Typing fast and wrong does not help, because errors have to be fixed before a block will finish, and the characters you typed wrong never counted in the first place.

That definition is the one most typing tests and typing jobs use, so a score here is comparable to numbers you will see quoted elsewhere. The usual reference points are roughly 40 WPM for an average adult who types regularly, 60 to 70 for a fluent touch typist, and over 100 for people who type for a living.

Common questions

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 WPM is typical for an adult who types regularly, 60 to 70 is fluent touch typing, and over 100 is professional territory. This test measures the same way those figures are usually quoted, so they are comparable.

Do mistakes count against me?

Wrong characters simply do not count towards your score, and you have to correct them before a block finishes. Speed with errors scores lower than steady accuracy.

How long is the test?

30 seconds. Finishing a block of words loads a fresh one immediately, so the test never runs out of text.
