How to Play the Chimp Test

The Chimp Test is a working memory challenge inspired by research at Kyoto University, where young chimpanzees consistently outperformed adult humans.

  1. Numbers (1, 2, 3...) appear briefly on the screen
  2. The numbers disappear and become yellow squares
  3. Tap the squares in numerical order (1 first, then 2, etc.)
  4. Each level adds one more number to remember

What's a Good Score?

Most humans reach Level 7-8. The famous chimp Ayumu regularly reaches Level 9+ with 90% accuracy. Can you beat the chimp?

Fun Fact: Young chimps have photographic-like short-term memory that declines with age, similar to humans. This is called "cognitive tradeoff hypothesis."
