How to Play the Chimp Test
The Chimp Test is a working memory challenge inspired by research at Kyoto University, where young chimpanzees consistently outperformed adult humans.
- Numbers (1, 2, 3...) appear briefly on the screen
- The numbers disappear and become yellow squares
- Tap the squares in numerical order (1 first, then 2, etc.)
- Each level adds one more number to remember
What's a Good Score?
Most humans reach Level 7-8. The famous chimp Ayumu regularly reaches Level 9+ with 90% accuracy. Can you beat the chimp?
Fun Fact: Young chimps have photographic-like short-term memory that declines with age, similar to humans. This is called "cognitive tradeoff hypothesis."
